At Portrush Family dental we believe regular oral hygiene care is the first step in prevention in keeping a healthy smile.
Our dentists at Portrush family dental strive for preventative treatment and education with the philosophy that prevention is better than a cure. By maintaining healthy gums and teeth from the beginning you can prevent yourself from more major and expensive dental treatment later on. At Portrush family Dental, our dentists will examine your teeth, and then customize your cleaning as part of your personalized care. At your initial examination you can expect a full comprehensive examination, followed by a scale and clean, dental radiographs and a fully drawn up treatment plan to be discussed with the dentist and yourself.
Useful info and health tips
As part of our ongoing commitment to you and your oral health the team at Portrush Family Dental strive to keep your oral health the best that it can be. This is done through regular examination and scale and cleans. With every examination a scale and clean is carried out along with a full assessment of your mouth, soft tissues and extra oral soft tissues. During your full examination we will not only check your teeth, but also do an oral cancer screen, check your jaw joint and check for any other abnormalities that only your dental health professional may notice. Your dentist will also spend the time with you explaining any procedure you may need but also explain why your oral health is the way it is. This may include how certain medications or medical conditions affect your oral health. We will also go through how to prevent further problems and how we can restore your current condition. We also recommend 6 monthly continuing examinations and scale and cleans. X-rays are recommended every 2 years. By sticking to this regime our dentists can catch issues early on. And by doing this, fillings or issues will usually be smaller and in doing so will usually be cheaper! Once we get your oral health back to an optimal state we then thrive to keep it that way. But that’s a two way road. We can do the work, but we need you to come let us take care of you to keep you there. A check up once every 5 years will just allow conditions that we may be monitoring to get worse without us noticing early on! So you’ve done the hard work getting your mouth and teeth the way you want it. Now let the team at Portrush Family Dental take care of your dental needs and keep you and your mouth in the best condition that it can be! Let’s keep you smiling confidently!

PROFESSIONALS WHO WILL TREAT YOU
Your dentist will be there from start to finish. The dentist will spend a good amount of time with you conducting the initial examination. During these examinations you can expect for them to examine your gums and teeth, document any changes in your overall health and medicine use, talk to you about oral health care and answer any questions you might have about your oral health and home care products. Your dentist will also conduct an oral exam of your mouth, inside and outside, looking for signs of oral cancer or other diseases. A fully correlated treatment plan and any recommendations will also drafted. Continuing from the examination you can also expect the following:
Though you may brush up to three times a day, there will always be places you just cannot reach. These can be in areas all the way at the back of your mouth or just below the surface of your gums. Regular 6-monthly cleans play the most important role for keeping your teeth and gums healthy for life. We only have one set – so why not make them last.
After your teeth have been cleaned, they are polished to remove plaque and stains on the tooth surface. The polish contains an abrasive substance and fluoride, and is applied using a small rotating rubber cup or brush attached to the dental hand piece.
Depending on the current state of your oral environment, your dentist will provide you further advice for you to carry out at home. This way we can work together as a team to help prevent anything more sinister to start.
If you haven’t been seen at Portrush Family Dental before then your dentist will likely take some X-rays. This help see between the teeth and under the gums where our eyes can’t see. This way if anything is happening we can catch it early and prevent things worsening. Otherwise, preventative X-rays will usually recommended to be taken every 2 years.
If any oral health problems are identified during your examination, your dentist will make recommendations for the best next steps. These might include referral to another oral health care specialist, additional diagnostic tests, or advice to return for restoration work or additional oral health care.
